November 2, 2011

My dad brought home my late Grandpa’s 4-track reel-to-reel tape player today, and one of the tapes in Grandpa’s collection was a selection of classic Louis Armstrong hits. I didn’t recognize most of them, but then I saw “La Vie En Rose” on the list and realized that I had the exact same recording of that song on my iPod. Here’s a picture of the cutting-edge in 1950’s music technology next to its 2011 counterpart. It’s truly wonderful to me that while our tools may grow obsolete faster than our clothes, the art they deliver to us endures the test of time.

“Hold me close and hold me fast, that magic spell you cast, this is la vie en rose…”

I don’t think lines like that one will ever become anachronisms.
